Yan Yu
Hey there! I’m Yan - a first year medical school student at the University of Calgary.
I grew up in China as a kid, but since age 8 I’ve also lived in Norway, Scotland, and now Canada. I’ve had the opportunity to not just see, but also to live in, some of the richest and poorest regions of the world.
I’ve slept in grand hotels and open-air teepees. I’ve used both water-free urinals and hole-in-the-grounds. And I’ve eaten everything from Peking duck to weeds picked right beside my grandparents’ rural Chinese hut.
Living through these experiences has made me question the world as it is now – is it just? Is it efficient? Will it last us? Over time, I’ve developed quite an interest in social, environmental, and economic sustainability.
Fortunately, I have had many chances to put my thoughts and ideas into practice, and luckily some have come to fruition.
What are some of my sustainability-related thoughts? You can find a few of them here on my "It Starts Here!" blog. Enjoy!

I used to be a radical environmentalist, myopic in approach and caustic with my berations. However, I fancy that I've seen the logical light as worked towards an undergraduate degree in Environmental and Earth System Science. Unfortunately, I find myself increasingly confused on what is right and wrong in the field of all things environmental. I am no stranger to frustration as I find myself mislead by so called "green idols" basing their theories on flash and fluff but little substance only later to be discovered. Hopefully, this blog will help me tackle environmental concerns both large and small and represent a balanced approach to sustainability.
